Court Reviews Mumia Abu-Jamal Death Sentence

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia heard arguments Tuesday over jury instructions given during convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal’s 1982 trial.

Abu-Jamal’s lawyer, Widener University law professor Judy Ritter, argued awkward wording on the verdict sheet may have confused jurors about mitigating circumstances that might favor a life sentence, rather than the death penalty.

‘”This court already agreed with that. It seems to me they don’t see any reason to change their minds,” Ritter said.

The same appeals court granted Abu-Jamal a new sentencing hearing in 2008, but earlier this year, the United States Supreme Court ordered the three judge panel to reconsider. They did, for about an hour’s worth of oral arguments.

Ritter says if Abu-Jamal prevails with the 3rd Circuit, there would be a new sentencing hearing.

Changing The Symbolism Of The Color Black

I am Van Stone, author and syndicated columnist, and I invite people from all intercultural backgrounds to join the Van Stone Productions Foundation. My hope is that, through the media, I can teach men, women, and children the importance of joining the organization Van Stone Productions Foundation (VSP) which helps to define the color “black.” I had exactly what VSP members were looking for when I used the admired works of Dr. Seuss’, “My Many Colored Days” to come up with the “Expression of Black” in the color black.

I assign colors to moods and emotions as was Dr. Seuss’ signature. VSP brings colors (nationalities), images (crafts), and partnerships (personal gender relationships) together as one family/community. I believe that black means happy. I like to say, "The thoughts of happy men generate good company for positive people."

"Unfortunately the color of black has been blamed for many tragedies. Such as dressing in black during school shootings, being black-listed or black-balled, evil, etc.," I'd also say, "The color black has been synonymous with many negative things and subconsciously the color black creates negative thoughts for many people.

I desire that the color black be re-designed and created in a whole new expression, just like green is for earth day, blue is for jean day, silver is for a 25th anniversary.

I have created a PEACE DAY for the wearing of the color black to stop unduly influencing people with the symbolism of the color black having negative connotations. On PEACE DAYS, all days are great for reading, honoring grandparents, doing any type of planting, telling close friends that you are glad to have them as a real friend, and hanging out in your library. PEACE DAYS are also for conversing about your favorite poems, realistic fiction, monsters, fantasy, fairy tales, mascots, or superheroes who may represent the color black. Then it would be good to draw the shape of a black rose or heart.
