PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — SEPTA honored a man with autism
on Wednesday, for defending a bus driver last month. It was part of the
transit agency's ceremony marking April as Autism Acceptance Month.
It was a month ago when 22-year-old Jamir Nelson was bullied by rowdy passengers as he defended his SEPTA bus driver in Chester. Nelson is autistic and the transit agency paid tribute to him during its Autism Acceptance Month observance at its Center City headquarters.
SEPTA leaders gave him a bag of swag to show their appreciation. They also highlighted the Accessible Travel Center at Suburban Station, where people with disabilities can board mock-ups of SEPTA vehicles to acquaint themselves with the system.

Philadelphia Front Page News TV-Radio News In Brief: PHS, PECO team up to plant hundreds of trees across Philadelphia forward news by KYW Newsradio frontpagenews1@yahoo.com
PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) —The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is joining forces with PECO and the community, planting hundreds of trees around the city starting Friday.
Dan Preziosi, director of trees at PHS, joined dozens of volunteers at the tree unloading event, where they offloaded over 900 trees and prepared them for planting this weekend.
“Yes, this is just the beginning,” said Preziosi. “It’s the biggest part of the whole operation, where the trees come out, get checked, and we make sure they’re healthy and that they’re looking good and staged in the right areas.”
Connor Coleman, with PECO, checked the trees to ensure they were in good shape. He expressed that the event was about promoting greener communities but also had a preemptive purpose.
“PECO does a lot of work with vegetation management around the lines, and we like to plant these in great spots that are not near the power lines”, he said.
David Velazquez, PECO president and CEO, said it’s just the right thing to do.

Above: Rollins tips his helmet to fans during his final Phillies season in 2014 after becoming the team's all-time hits leader.
PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Jimmy Rollins, the
Phillies’ iconic leadoff man for nearly a decade between 2001 and 2011,
will be enshrined on the team’s Wall of Fame this upcoming season in a
ceremony on Aug. 1, 2025.
As the leadoff man, Rollins was often a catalyst for a potent offense during the team’s back-to-back World Series runs in 2008 and 2009. A win in 2008 over the Tampa Bay Rays was the Phillies’ first since 1980.
The year before, Rollins declared the Phils the team to beat in the National League as the team won the National League East and advanced to its first playoffs since a 1993 World Series loss. They were subsequently swept by the Colorado Rockies in the first round, but Rollins won the National League MVP award for his season, which saw him achieve a quadruple double — double digit home runs, stolen bases, triples and doubles in a season — becoming only the fourth player in MLB history to do so. He also won the Silver Slugger that year.
In 15 of Rollins’ 17 total MLB seasons with the Phillies, his 2,306 hits is the most of any Phillies player ever, and he’s also top of the team’s history books in doubles and leadoff home runs.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia's pop orchestra has a new leader.
Australia native Christopher Dragon will take the baton of the No Name Pops as its new music director on July 1.
Dragon said leading one of America's major pop orchestras is a responsibility and a privilege. He has kept an eye on the No Name Pops since it was formed a couple of years ago.
“When I heard about the musicians forming together to build their own orchestra … I contacted them and I asked how can I become involved,” he said. “To see how far it has come in two years is amazing.”
Dragon, the resident conductor of the Colorado Symphony and music director of the Greensboro Symphony and Wyoming Symphony Orchestra, is known for his high-energy performances. He has collaborated with artists such as Wu-Tang Clan, Ben Folds, Danny Elfman and Philly’s own Boyz II Men.

Above: Seal pup came ashore to rest and regain strength, according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center.
PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It’s seal season, and the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, New Jersey is urging the public to stay away from resting and injured seals you may come across on the beach — for their safety and yours.
Director Sheila Dean said it is common to see the animals this time of year. Grey seal pups that are born in Canada or New England come ashore on Jersey Shore beaches to rest after swimming great distances.
Dean said the public should stay at least 150 feet away from them. If the animals feel threatened, they may retreat to the ocean and potentially drown, if they are still too tired. Or, they may attack and bite humans.
“It’s very important that they rest undisturbed because if people are making noise or getting close to them, then they might go back in the water and there is always a chance that one of these little guys could drown because they just don’t have the strength anymore. They need to rest,” she stressed.

Philadelphia Front Page News TV-Radio News In Brief: A cure for horse blindness could let humans see again too Forward news by KYW Newsradio frontpagenews1@yahoo.com
Research in horses may eventually lead to a treatment for people who develop blindness as a result of the autoimmune disease recurrent uveitis, according to a study recently published in the Frontiers in Immunology journal.
According to the study authors, recurrent uveitis (RU) is “a leading cause of ocular detriment” in both humans and horses. In Equine Ophthalmology by Ann E. Dwyer, she notes that data suggests at least 1% of horses lose sight in one or both eyes during their lifetime. A 2012 study published in the Ophthalmology journal said uveitis was estimated to cause 30,000 new cases of legal blindness in humans annually in the U.S.
“Equine and human RU share many similarities including spontaneous disease and aberrant cytokine signaling,” said authors of the recent study. Cytokines are a type of protein made by certain immune and non-immune cells and they effect on the immune system.
SOCS1 is “a critical regulator of cytokine signaling,” per the study authors, and reduced levels of it are associated with multiple autoimmune diseases. In the past, topical administration of SOCS1-KIR, a substance that mimics SOCS1, was linked with reduced ocular issues in horses with RU.

Tracy Morgan feels lucky to be alive to celebrate 'Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary.
The
56-year-old comedian was in a coma for two weeks and had to learn to
walk and talk again after a Walmart truck hit his limousine from behind
in June 2014, and he has expressed his gratitude at having made a full
recovery from his injuries.
Speaking to Matt Rogers during the 'SNL50: The Red Carpet' special on Sunday (16.02.25), he said: "This is incredible. Just thank the Lord that I'm a part of this, that I survived the accident and I'm alive to be here for this."
The former '30 Rock' star was a 'Saturday Night Live' cast member from 1996 to 2003 and he admitted being chosen for the show was the highlight of his career.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Five years on, Mural Arts Philadelphia continues to elevate the work of emerging Black artists in the city through its Fellowship for Black Artists exhibition.
“This show really centers on human connection and the connection to the world around us. I want people to take that in because it’s a very human experience,” said fellowship curator Chelsea Luster.
This
year’s exhibition features 15 local artists, including Ronald
Washington. He created narrative paintings that share seemingly timeless
stories to bring people of all ages together.
“The work is so joyful, vibrant and beautiful. Each artist is expressing themselves and the world around them. So I think this show is really a reflection that now more than ever we have to lean on each other. We need community,” Luster said.
The exhibit runs throughout Black History Month at Ubuntu Gallery on Germantown Avenue.

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — The future of an elementary school in Delaware county’s largest school district hangs in the balance as administrators try to figure out their next move.
The Upper Darby School District leases Charles Kelly Elementary School from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
“Like a lot of older facilities, it obviously needs updates and repairs and renovations. Since we don’t own that property and that school, that’s not really financially the wisest thing to do, to pour money into a facility that we don’t own,” said Superintendent Dr. Daniel McGarry.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For Black History Month, one illustrator is bringing the journey of African American culture to Cherry Street Pier.
Kenneth Thomas, better known as Thomcat23 on Instagram, said the first Africans to come to the United States led a life detached from the cultures they were ripped away from during slavery.
“We had voided a past. And then that past had to be filled with something… And through our song, through our dance, through our work, through our love, through our hate, we created an entire culture and a universe,” Thomas said.
His exhibit, Cosmic Dance, features five illustrations in his unique style to showcase how that new culture came to be. Each piece is paired with a line of poetry that hearkens back to the Transatlantic Passage, the first five lines reading, “In the beginning, there was a rhythm in the darkness.”

Philadelphia Front Page News TV-Radio News In Brief: Eva Blackwell: Changing the game by giving independence to the autism community Forward news by KYW Newsradio frontpagenews1@yahoo.com
PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Giving people with autism a voice and an opportunity to become independent is Eva Blackwell’s passion. In 2009, she founded the Verge of Independence Project to support young adults on the autism spectrum through multimedia advocacy, using her 20-plus years of experience in the industry.
“You have some young adults who would prefer to write. Some of them like to vlog. Some would prefer to create a video short. So all of those things, I’m able to support them,” she said.
Blackwell is familiar with the needs of the autism community. Her 35-year-old son Branford was diagnosed when he was 7.
“He is very verbal and has always been someone to very expressively share what his needs and wants are, and also able to advocate for himself. So there is a lot of frustration that I saw with some of his classmates, that if they’re not able to express themselves, they do get frustrated,” she said.
The Verge of Independence Project facilitates workshops, both in-person and virtually, and collaborates with other organizations to educate and train the autism community to address real-world issues.

Terrill Haigler
PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. For Philly’s own Terrill Haigler — also known as Ya Fav Trashman — ridding the city’s neighborhoods of trash is a treasure in itself.
“Clutter creates chaos, which creates anxiety,” he said, “and in anxiety, you make bad choices because you’re not thinking straight.”
Haigler, a former sanitation worker, has been a clean streets advocate since 2020. One of his dreams was to get his own trash truck. He was recently awarded a Keystone Communities Program grant, allowing him to purchase not one but two trucks.
Haigler said clean streets result in less crime. His litter task force employs formerly incarcerated individuals to help haul trash around town.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A bookstore and comics shop in Chestnut Hill has on display a 40-year-old action figure on loan from the Philly Doll Museum collection. The figurine will be there through Black History Month and beyond.
Sun-Man was born in 1985 after marketing and communications expert Yla Eason learned there were no Black superhero figures. She created Sun-Man and founded Olmec Toys. Now the company is a case study for business school classes teaching multicultural marketing.
“It was created in response to a comment her son had made, about feeling like he couldn’t pretend to be He-Man because he wasn’t white,” said Gralin Hughes, co-owner of Multiverse, a Chestnut Hill bookstore with a focus on science fiction, fantasy and comic books by artists of color.

There’s no doubt that since the advent of television, certain events in American history have been burned into the nation's collective memory because of their mass availability, their tragic results, and the fact that they unfolded live right before our eyes.
If you were a school-aged kid on January 28, 1986, chances are you remember exactly where you were and what you felt that day.
It was supposed to be a revitalizing triumph for NASA to make people excited about space exploration again after over a decade of fading interest and diminishing publicity with each subsequent shuttle launch.
Among the seven astronauts slated for a trip to space about the Challenger space shuttle was a regular citizen, a schoolteacher named Christa McAuliffe, who was supposed to lead a groundbreaking educational experiment and teach lessons from space.
