Exhibit At Cape May Gallery Focuses On Role Of Black Church In History
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A new exhibit examines the historic role played by the church in the growth of the African American community in Cape May County, New Jersey.
Can I Get a Witness! is just what part of it’s title says, a testament to the church in Cape May County, which was integral to the development of a number of black communities there since the 19th century.
Bernadette Matthews, executive director of the Center for Community Arts, says the exhibit was to concentrate on three churches but, “What we found in our initial research was that while Cape May is the end of the line and, in some perspectives, the beginning, African Americans migrated to these other locations and formed communities and churches as well.”
