Steven Witherspoon
Steven Witherspoon was born in Philadelphia, September 2, 1956, the child of Black American parents, Shirley Byrd and Charles Witherspoon. He is the third oldest of eight children. Steve, who is one year older than his brother, “Terrible “ Tim Witherspoon, former two time
Heavyweight Champion of the World, is a former Professional Boxer. After retiring from being a professional boxing competitor, Steve went forward to train adults who are professional boxers. And he provides training and coaching for children who are beginner boxers as well. Growing up
as a teen he was always active in both sports and community reform. And he studied the secrets of good restauranting. Steve teamed up with a lot of healthy dinners, also.
In 1972, while a student at South Philadelphia High School, Steve participated in sports during the after school hours. He participated in boxing and football and the neighborhood youth council. He was a block captain and in the boys club during the evening hours. In 1973 he used his being the second string quarterback for South Philadelphia High School as a tool to mentor fellow classmates to stay in school. In 1974 he used his graduation from high school as a tool which helped build a neighborhood citizen reform group in South Philadelphia.
South Philadelphia had been deteriorating for many years. Steve Witherspoon organized his neighborhood youth council among local residents willing to use marches and boxing to unite to protest their community's decline. From 1975 to 1985 Steve had great success in stabilizing some of the youth who lived in the South and West Philadelphia area and restoring the morale of local teenagers. A kid dining out on healthier food was an option.
With this success behind him, Steve in 1987 was one of the first as a fighter-trainer to establish himself as coach bringing his method of reform to other declining urban neighborhoods. His approach depended on uniting ordinary young people around immediate grievances in their neighborhoods and stirring them to work hard vigorously for self-discipline and success. He was so successful with his own style of community work that in the year 2000, in Austin, Texas, Steve trained Shakurah Witherspoon to the IBA super feather weight Championship and then for 10 years he lived in Williamsport, Pa, traveling back and forth to Philadelphia, serving youth. He was the head coach in charge of at least thirty children in boxing and violence reduction programming.
Steven is now a proud member of VSP Foundation, Inc, a nonprofit that conducts fun restaurant reviews from time to time around the town. Steven practices use of self-motivation of ordinary students to help make neighborhoods grow. And he uses boxing and restaurant reviews to help youth and adults lose surprisingly bad habits.
