AP PHOTOS: Heat wave grips much of US

Mikel Welch, 9, floats on his back as he cools off in a fountain Friday, July 6, 2012, in St. Louis. Excessive-heat warnings remained in place Friday for all of Iowa, Indiana and Illinois as well as much of Wisconsin, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Kentucky.

The heat wave gripping much of the country is continuing its hold, with temperatures of 100 degrees or higher spreading to northeastern cities including Philadelphia and New York.

The heat set records Saturday in Washington - 105 degrees - as well as St. Louis (106), and Indianapolis (104).

At least 30 deaths are being blamed on the heat, including nine in Maryland and 10 in Chicago, mostly among the elderly. Extreme heat was also cited as a factor in three deaths in Wisconsin, two in Tennessee and three in Pennsylvania.

There is a break in sight: Cooler weather should begin to arrive in many regions Sunday.

Changing The Symbolism Of The Color Black

I am Van Stone, author and syndicated columnist, and I invite people from all intercultural backgrounds to join the Van Stone Productions Foundation. My hope is that, through the media, I can teach men, women, and children the importance of joining the organization Van Stone Productions Foundation (VSP) which helps to define the color “black.” I had exactly what VSP members were looking for when I used the admired works of Dr. Seuss’, “My Many Colored Days” to come up with the “Expression of Black” in the color black.

I assign colors to moods and emotions as was Dr. Seuss’ signature. VSP brings colors (nationalities), images (crafts), and partnerships (personal gender relationships) together as one family/community. I believe that black means happy. I like to say, "The thoughts of happy men generate good company for positive people."

"Unfortunately the color of black has been blamed for many tragedies. Such as dressing in black during school shootings, being black-listed or black-balled, evil, etc.," I'd also say, "The color black has been synonymous with many negative things and subconsciously the color black creates negative thoughts for many people.

I desire that the color black be re-designed and created in a whole new expression, just like green is for earth day, blue is for jean day, silver is for a 25th anniversary.

I have created a PEACE DAY for the wearing of the color black to stop unduly influencing people with the symbolism of the color black having negative connotations. On PEACE DAYS, all days are great for reading, honoring grandparents, doing any type of planting, telling close friends that you are glad to have them as a real friend, and hanging out in your library. PEACE DAYS are also for conversing about your favorite poems, realistic fiction, monsters, fantasy, fairy tales, mascots, or superheroes who may represent the color black. Then it would be good to draw the shape of a black rose or heart.
