PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — As lawmakers facing a midnight budget deadline lock horns, the Philadelphia School District is likely to adopt a budget Monday night without knowing how much revenue it will be getting from the state.
Amid reports that House Republicans are demanding that Philadelphia Democrats vote for state pension reform in return for a cigarette tax authorization to fund Philly schools, Mayor Michael Nutter angrily blasted legislators.
“The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has a constitutional responsibility to fund education efficiently and thoroughly in this state,” Nutter said. “And the children of Philadelphia are being educationally abused by the behavior and activity that we are now seeing in Harrisburg.”
