While each state crowns its own champions, fierce competition, intense emotion and a whole lot of sweat make their way onto just about every court this time of year.
And There Were Two
Macy Keen of Tamarac, Fla., and one of just four top 100 undecided seniors entering the week, picked Miami, but she wasn't the only big name commit this week.The No. 37 prospect in the 2012 class, Macy Keen of Tamarac, Fla., should in time give Miami an athletic, shot-blocking post presence.
Macy Keen boosts Miami's class
Macy Keen of Tamarac, Fla., chose to stay close to home. The 6-foot-5 center visited schools as far away as Tulsa, Okla., before deciding that coach Katie Meier's program was the right place for her.
The regular National Letter of Intent signing period starts April 11. It's the next time high school seniors are able to sign with college programs.
In time, the nation's No. 37 ranked player will give the Hurricanes a post presence to replace current redshirt junior center Pepper Wilson. An athletic shot blocker with an evolving offensive game, Keen and fellow Miami pledge No. 67 Keyona Hayes of Austell, Ga., should combine to make the Hurricanes' a tough frontline for ACC opponents.
Powers bolsters MSU
Aerial Powers of Detroit, Mich., will bolster the Michigan State Spartans' incoming recruiting class.
Powers, the No. 97 player in the ESPNU HoopGurlz top 100, is an athletic wing who should bring a lot to Michigan State's perimeter attack. She also helps the Spartans' continuing effort to keep some of the state of Michigan's top talent at home.
Powers joins No. 27 Branndais Agee of Detroit, Mich., and Mariah Harris, a three-star guard from Springfield, Ohio, as members of coach Suzy Merchant's recruiting class.
Nunn to Winthrop
Schaquilla Nunn of Fayette, Ga., was one of the best true post players left on the board going into the month of March. That all changed on Thursday when she decided to attend Winthrop next year.
A three-star post prospect, Nunn's presence on the roster will help strengthen the depth of a team that went 18-12 overall this season in the Big South conference. Coach Marlene Stollings' staff has been active in recruiting with five players locked in for their incoming class of 2012. The 6-3 post will join forces with two other incoming freshman post players in Juliette Love of Columbia, S.C., and Ashley Porter from Birmingham, Ala.
Whitted narrows her options
Peyton Whitted of Suwanee, Ga., is No. 60 in the ESPN HoopGurlz Super 60. At 6-2 she brings a good amount of versatility to the court as she has the ability to play on the inside as well as float on the perimeter with her smooth jumper.
Whitted has been in high demand so far this year, receiving strong interest from a number of BCS programs. Recently, Whitted has begun the process of taking unofficial visits and narrowing down her potential college choices. At this point Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Penn State, Vanderbilt, and Virginia all are high on the class of 2013 forward's list.
The junior at North Gwinnett (Suwanee, Ga.) plans to take more unofficial visits in the spring.
