Could the first Chinese have come from Egypt? Chinese have definite ideas about their heritage, so the idea that they may have come from Egypt is shocking

A decorated scientist has ignited a passionate debate with claims that the founders of Chinese civilization were not Chinese

On a cool Sunday evening in March, a geochemist named Sun Weidong gave a public lecture to an audience of laymen, students, and professors at the University of Science and Technology in Hefei, the capital city of the landlocked province of Anhui in eastern China.

But the professor didn’t just talk about geochemistry.

He also cited several ancient Chinese classics, at one point quoting historian Sima Qian’s description of the topography of the Xia empire — traditionally regarded as China’s founding dynasty, dating from 2070 to 1600 B.C. “Northwards the stream is divided and becomes the nine rivers,” wrote Sima Qian in his first century historiography, the Records of the Grand Historian.

“Reunited, it forms the opposing river and flows into the sea.”

In other words, “the stream” in question wasn’t China’s famed Yellow River, which flows from west to east. “There is only one major river in the world which flows northwards. Which one is it?” the professor asked. “The Nile,” someone replied.

Sun then showed a map of the famed Egyptian river and its delta — with nine of its distributaries flowing into the Mediterranean. This author, a researcher at the same institute, watched as audience members broke into smiles and murmurs, intrigued that these ancient Chinese texts seemed to better agree with the geography of Egypt than that of China.

In the past year, Sun, a highly decorated scientist, has ignited a passionate online debate with claims that the founders of Chinese civilization were not in any sense Chinese but actually migrants from Egypt. He conceived of this connection in the 1990s while performing radiometric dating of ancient Chinese bronzes; to his surprise, their chemical composition more closely resembled those of ancient Egyptian bronzes than native Chinese ores.

Both Sun’s ideas and the controversy surrounding them flow out of a much older tradition of nationalist archaeology in China, which for more than a century has sought to answer a basic scientific question that has always been heavily politicized: Where do the Chinese people come from?

Sun argues that China’s Bronze Age technology, widely thought by scholars to have first entered the northwest of the country through the prehistoric Silk Road, actually came by sea. According to him, its bearers were the Hyksos, the Western Asian people who ruled parts of northern Egypt as foreigners between the 17th and 16th centuries B.C., until their eventual expulsion.

He notes that the Hyksos possessed at an earlier date almost all the same remarkable technology — bronze metallurgy, chariots, literacy, domesticated plants and animals — that archaeologists discovered at the ancient city of Yin, the capital of China’s second dynasty, the Shang, between 1300 and 1046 B.C. Since the Hyksos are known to have developed ships for war and trade that enabled them to sail the Red and Mediterranean seas, Sun speculates that a small population escaped their collapsing dynasty using seafaring technology that eventually brought them and their Bronze Age culture to the coast of China.

Sun’s thesis proved controversial when the Chinese travel site Kooniao first posted it online in the form of a 93,000-character essay in September 2015. As the liberal magazine Caixincommented, “His courageous title and plain language attracted the interest of more than a few readers.” That title was Explosive Archaeological Discovery: The Ancestors of the Chinese People Came from Egypt, and the essay was reproduced and discussed online, on internet portals such as Sohu and popular message boards such as Zhihu and Tiexue.

Kooniao also set up a widely read page dedicated to the subject on the microblogging platform Weibo — hashtagged “Chinese People Come From Egypt” — which contains a useful sample of responses from the public. Some of these simply express outrage, often to the point of incoherence: “That expert’s absurd theory randomly accepts anyone as his forebears,” fumed one. “This is people’s deep inferiority complex at work!” Another asked, “How can the children of the Yellow Emperor have run over to Egypt? This topic is really too pathetic. The important thing is to live in the moment!”

Other commentators have been more thoughtful. If they are not fully convinced, they are at least willing to entertain Sun’s ideas. In fact, a rough count of comments from the intellectually curious outnumbers those of the purely reactionary by about 3-to-2. As one user wrote, “I approve. One has to look intelligently at this theory. Whether it turns to be true or false, it is worth investigating.” Another wrote, “The world is such a big place that one finds many strange things in it. One can’t say it is impossible.” One more wrote, “One can’t just sweepingly dismiss it as wrong or curse out the evidence as false. Exchanges between cultures can be very deep and distant.”

Anticipating his critics, Sun wrote online that to examine anew the origins of Chinese civilization “may appear ridiculous in the eyes of some, because historians long ago stated clearly: We are the children of the Yan and Yellow Emperor.”

Historian Sima Qian took these legendary figures as the progenitor of the Han Chinese; and the Yellow Emperor’s great-grandson, Yu the Great, as the founder of the semimythical Xia dynasty.

These served as the origin stories for imperial China and continued to be credited for decades after the Republic replaced it in 1912, so that even the nation’s most iconoclastic and rebellious sons — Sun Yat-Sen, Chiang Kai-Shek, and People’s Republic founder Mao Zedong among them — have at some time or other felt the need to pay their respects at the Yellow Emperor’s tomb.

Even now, the oft-repeated claim that Chinese civilization is approximately 5,000 years old takes as its starting point the supposed reign of this legendary emperor.

Unbeknownst to many, an anti-Qing Dynasty agitator was the first to publish (under a pseudonym) this claim for the nation’s antiquity in 1903. As his nationalist ideology had it, “If we desire to preserve the survival of the Han Nation, then it is imperative that we venerate the Yellow Emperor.” At that time, the Qing dynasty was in serious decline, its obvious backwardness compared with Western powers the cause of much soul-searching.

Anti-Qing intellectuals began to examine critically the roots of Chinese civilization and, for the first time, seized on the idea that they lay in the West. The work that most captured their imagination was that of the French philologist, Albert Terrien de Lacouperie, who in 1892 published the Western Origin of the Early Chinese Civilization from 2300 B.C. to 200 A.D.

Translated into Chinese in 1903, it compared the hexagrams of the Book of Changes with the cuneiform of Mesopotamia and proposed that Chinese civilization originated in Babylon. The Yellow Emperor was identified with a King Nakhunte, who supposedly led his people out of the Middle East and into the Central Plain of the Yellow River Valley around 2300 B.C.

By 1915, the theory was widespread enough that the national anthem of the republic, commissioned by President Yuan Shikai referred to it obliquely, calling China “the famous descendant from Kunlun Peak,” which Chinese mythology locates in the far, far West.

Another endorsement came from Sun Yat-Sen, founder of the Republic of China, who stated in his 1924 Three Principles of the People lectures that the “growth of Chinese civilization may … be explained by the fact that the settlers who migrated from another place to this valley already possessed a very high civilization.”

To these and other revolutionaries, Sino-babylonianism was not only the latest European scientific opinion. It was the hope that since China shared the same ancestry as other great civilizations, there was no ultimate reason why it should not catch up with more advanced nations in Europe and America.

Sino-Babylonianism fell out of favor in China during the late 1920s and early 1930s, when Japanese aggression escalated and a different nationalist politics took hold. Chinese historians, seeking to distance China from imperialist powers, cast a critical eye on Western origin theories and their earlier supporters. At around the same time, modern scientific archaeology was debuting in China.

The discovery of Neolithic pottery in Longshan, Shandong, in 1928 showed that eastern China had been inhabited by indigenous groups before the Bronze Age migration Lacouperie had posited. In the same year, excavation of the city of Yin began. On account of the excellence of the Yin-Shang’s material culture — its famous oracle bones, for example, whose writing is the ancestor of the modern Chinese script used today — that polity is often considered the “root of Chinese civilization,” situated well within China’s borders, in present-day Anyang, Henan.

In the end, Western origin theories were replaced by what sounds like a compromise: a dual-origin theory of Chinese civilization. The view proposed that Eastern Neolithic culture moving West encountered Western Neolithic culture moving East, fusing to form the progenitors of the Shang. It held steady until the 1950s.

But Chinese archeology took a radical swing toward more extreme nationalism after the 1949 founding of the People’s Republic of China, when, in the words of the historian James Leibold, “China’s scientific community closed inward on itself.” Nationalism and authoritarianism required the interpretation of archaeological evidence as proof that Chinese civilization had arisen natively, without outside influences. As the Sichuan University archaeologist — and eventual dissident — Tong Enzheng wrote in his fascinating account of the politicization of scholarship between 1949 and 1979: “Mao Zedong implemented a comprehensive anti-Western policy after 1949,” which expanded “already extant anti-imperialism … ultimately becoming total anti-foreignism. Unavoidably, Chinese archaeology was affected.”

Maoism also required a belief that Chinese civilization had developed in accordance with “objective” Marxist historical laws, from a primitive band to a socialist society. Mao-era archaeologists thus strove to use their findings to prove these laws, legitimizing the status quo.

As Xia Nai, the director of the Institute of Archaeology himself, wrote in a 1972 paper, “We archaeologists must follow the guide of Marxism, Leninism, and the thought of Mao Zedong, conscientiously fulfilling the great guiding principle of Chairman Mao, to ‘make the past serve the present.’”

It’s no surprise then that during the Cultural Revolution meetings were convened under such absurd headings as “Using the Antiquities Stored in the Temple of Confucius in Qufu County to criticize Lin Biao and Confucius.” Meanwhile, revolutionary sloganeering found its way into scientific publications alongside the data.

Blatant ideological bias faded from scientific endeavors in the post-1978 reform era, but the ultimate goal of Chinese archaeology — to piece out the nation’s history — remained. The best-known example from that era is the Xia-Shang-Zhou Chronology Project, directly inspired by the achievements of Egyptian archaeology. State Councilor Song Jian toured Egypt in 1995 and was particularly impressed by a genealogy of the pharaohs that went back to the third millennium B.C. This prompted him to campaign for a project — included in the government’s ninth five-year plan — that would give Chinese dynasties a comparable record.

Mobilizing over 200 experts on a budget of around $1.5 million over five years, the Chronology Project has been considered the largest state-sponsored project in the humanities since 1773, when the Qianlong emperor commissioned the Siku quanshu, an encyclopedia roughly 20 times the length of the Britannica.

Some questioned the Chronology Project’s motives. One of the most prominent detractors was University of Chicago historian Edward L. Shaughnessy, who complained, “There’s a chauvinistic desire to push the historical record back into the third millennium B.C., putting China on a par with Egypt. It’s much more a political and a nationalistic urge than a scholarly one.” Others criticized the project’s methods and results. The Stanford archaeologist Li Liu, for instance, took issue with the fact that it regarded the Xia as historical and fixed dates for it, when there is still no conclusive archaeological evidence for its existence.

But the project also had defenders, including Harvard anthropologist Yun Kuen Lee, who pointed out that “the intrinsic relationship between the study of the past and nationalism does not necessarily imply that the study of the past is inherently corrupted.” The usefulness of archaeology in bolstering a nation’s pride and legitimacy — explaining and, to some extent, justifying its language, culture, and territorial claims — means that most archaeological traditions have a nationalistic impulse behind them.

Thus, in Israel, archaeology focuses on the period of the Old Testament; in the Scandinavian countries, it focuses on that of the Vikings. “The important question that we should ask,” Yun went on to say, “is if the scientists of the project were able to maintain scientific rigor.”

In some ways, Sun’s current theory is an unintended result of the Chronology Project’s scientific rigor. At the project’s launch in 1996, he was a Ph.D. student in the radiation laboratory of the University of Science and Technology. Of the 200 or so items of bronze ware he was responsible for analyzing, some came from the city of Yin. He found that the radioactivity of these Yin-Shang bronzes had almost exactly the same characteristics as that of ancient Egyptian bronzes, suggesting that their ores all came from the same source: African mines.

Perhaps anticipating serious controversy, Sun’s doctoral supervisor did not allow Sun to report his findings at the time. Sun was asked to hand over his data and switched to another project. Twenty years after the start of his research and now a professor in his own right, Sun is finally ready to say all he knows about the Yin-Shang and China’s Bronze Age culture.

Although the public has mostly received Sun’s theory with an open mind, it still lies outside the academic mainstream. Since the 1990s, most Chinese archaeologists have accepted that much of the nation’s Bronze Age technology came from regions outside of China. But it is not thought to have arrived directly from the Middle East in the course of an epic migration. The more prosaic consensus is that it was transmitted into China from Central Asia by a slow process of cultural exchange (trade, tribute, dowry) across the northern frontier, mediated by Eurasian steppe pastoralists who had contacts with indigenous groups in both regions.

Despite this, the fascination with ancient Egypt appears unlikely to go away soon. As the Xia-Shang-Zhou Chronology project demonstrated, the sentiment has deep, politically tinged roots. These were on display again during President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Egypt in January to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations. On arrival, Xi greeted Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi with an Egyptian proverb: “Once you drink from the Nile, you are destined to return.” They celebrated the antiquity of their two civilizations with a joint visit to the Luxor temple.

It remains to be seen whether Sun’s evidence will be incorporated into mainstream politics to prove a long-standing Sino-Egyptian cultural relationship. But if it is, the proverb Xi uttered after he set foot in Egypt will have been strangely prophetic.

Expert: Scary Clown ‘Prank’ Is Teachable Moment For Parents

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia Police say a 13-year-old girl was behind the “scary clown threats” on social media targeting Philadelphia schools.

Suspicious clown sightings and social media threats have caused widespread concern across the country, including Philadelphia over the weekend. Police Lieutenant John Stanford points the finger at a teenage girl.

“She along with a friend of hers decided that this was a prank, something fun to do. At some point in time, these two classmates, decided to take this, post this information on Instagram, threatening a couple of our local schools,” Stanford said. “She also indicated that she didn’t have any intent to harm anyone when doing this.”

Prospects Dim For Approval Of Philly Ride-Sharing Bill Before Friday Deadline

 (Credit: CBS 3)

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) — It appears unlikely that state lawmakers will extend authorization for ride-share services in the city of Philadelphia before it expires on Friday. At least one of the major ride share companies says it will continue operating anyway.

The state Senate has already passed ride-sharing legislation and the ball is now with the House. But Montgomery County Republican Robert Godshall – who, as chairman of the House Consumer Affairs Committee, is a key player in crafting a compromise – said Monday the chance of extending authorization before the Friday deadline is “pretty slim.”

Judge Rejects Motion To Try Teen As Adult In Death Of Wilmington Student

DOVER, Del. (CBS) – On Friday, a Delaware judge denied a request from prosecutors to try a teen as an adult for her role in the fatal beating of Amy Joyner-Francis.

In an announcement made Friday, the judge noted that this was the teen’s “first contact with the justice system” and that it was a “tragic” incident that would have a longstanding impact on the community for years.

The defendant will instead be tried in Family Court on criminally negligent homicide and conspiracy charges.

The 16-year-old is accused of hitting Amy Joyner-Francis several times in a bathroom attack at Howard High School in Wilmington. Authorities say the teen’s physical abuse is what led to a cardiac incident that caused Joyner’s death.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A group of recent high school grads wrapped
up a six week program at U-Penn that prepped them for college.

It’s called “College Bridge.” Funded by the Netter Center and Philly Youth Network, the program puts recent graduates from West Philadelphia and Sayre High Schools through the rigors of college life.

“What does it mean to be on a campus, cross campus for multiple classes, navigate what assignments, who do you talk to get help,” says Andrew Scherea, co-director. He says the six week program teaches the students how to plan their studies and exposes them to what it’s like to read hundreds of pages for just one class. But the program also allows them to reflect on their years in public schools.

“They had to look at their own experiences,” he says, “I was impressed at their reflection, their research and their solutions.”

6 more Michigan public workers charged in Flint water crisis

6 more Michigan public workers charged in Flint water crisis

FLINT, Mich. (AP) -- Six current or former state employees were charged Friday with misconduct and other crimes in the Flint water crisis, bringing to nine the number of public officials facing prosecution over the lead contamination that alarmed parents across the country.

Attorney General Bill Schuette filed a total of 18 new charges against three employees from the Department of Environmental Quality - Liane Shekter Smith, Adam Rosenthal and Patrick Cook - and three from the Department of Health and Human Services - Nancy Peeler, Corinne Miller and Robert Scott. In addition to the misconduct in office charges, there were willful neglect of duty and various conspiracy counts.

"Each attempted to bury or cover up, downplay or hide info that contradicted their own narrative, their story ... (that) there's nothing wrong with Flint water, it's perfectly safe to use. In essence, these individuals concealed the truth and they were criminally wrong to do so," Schuette said at a news conference in the poor, predominantly black city of nearly 100,000 people 55 miles north of Detroit.

Under the leadership of a state-appointed emergency manager, officials in April 2014 began using the Flint River as Flint's water supply to save money. State officials didn't require that the river water be treated for corrosion, and lead from aging pipes and fixtures leached into Flint homes and businesses. The city remained on that water supply for 18 months, despite complaints from residents about its smell and color.

Elevated levels of the toxin were discovered in children. Lead contamination has been linked to learning disabilities and other problems.

The announcement Friday represented the second round of charges stemming from the water crisis. In January, Schuette announced the appointment of a special counsel to help his office investigate whether laws were broken. In April, two state regulators and a city employee were charged with official misconduct, evidence-tampering and other offenses.

In June, Schuette filed a lawsuit against two water engineering companies, saying their negligence caused and exacerbated Flint's lead-tainted water crisis and demanding what could total hundreds of millions of dollars in damages.

Shekter Smith, former head of the state's drinking water office, appeared last month in a Detroit courtroom so her lawyer could assert her constitutional right against self-incrimination amid ongoing investigations. She hadn't yet been charged but was reassigned after the water crisis came to light and her firing was announced in February.

Shekter Smith's attorney, Brian Morley, said Friday that he was surprised she was charged.
"It's disappointing. ... I think we're going to be really hard-pressed to find that she did anything wrong, and certainly nothing criminally wrong," he said.

The Associated Press left messages for Cook and Miller and could not find listed numbers for Rosenthal, Peeler and Scott.

Four of those charged Friday have been suspended without pay.

The Environmental Quality and Health and Human Services departments said two workers from each department are off the job for now. The two other people charged Friday had either already retired or been fired.

Schuette and Andy Arena, the lead investigator who once led Detroit's FBI office, say nobody is off-limits from investigation or prosecution.

"You don't start at the top," Arena said. "We're starting to work our way up, and expanding our investigation. ... The scope of the investigation is progressing exactly how it should be."
Gov. Rick Snyder has apologized for regulatory failures, and the state environmental agency has said it wasn't required to add an anti-corrosion chemical until after a year of testing.

In March, a state task force that investigated the Flint crisis concluded that it was a "case of environmental injustice." The Michigan Civil Rights Commission is holding public hearings on the matter.

Federal experts now say filtered tap water is safe for everyone to drink in Flint, though some doctors still are recommending bottled water for pregnant women and children ages 5 and younger.

San Diego Police heavily armed police officers surround a house about a half-mile away, urging a man inside to surrender in San Diego Friday, July 29, 2016. One San Diego police officer was killed and another was wounded in a shootout following a late-night traffic stop, Friday night. A suspect was wounded and taken into custody a short time later and hours later police surrounded the home as they searched for man described as a possible accomplice.

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- One San Diego police officer was killed and another was wounded in a shootout following a late-night stop to check out a person, authorities said Friday. A suspect was wounded and taken into custody shortly after the gunfight and police hours later surrounded a home as they searched for man described as a possible accomplice.

Officers broke windows, pounded on the roof and shouted for the man they thought was there to surrender but he wasn't found there.

They then raced to another house about two blocks away, positioning an armored truck and robots outside.

But he wasn't there either and the manhunt was still on Friday afternoon.

Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman identified the dead officer as Jonathan DeGuzman, a 16-year veteran of the force who was married with two children. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Officer Wade Irwin, 32, underwent surgery after being shot and was expected to survive, Zimmerman said. His wife was at the hospital during surgery.

Both officers were wearing bulletproof vests and body cameras, and quickly called for assistance from other officers, Zimmerman said.

Police initially said the shootout started following a traffic stop, but Zimmerman later clarified that detectives were trying to determine whether it was a traffic stop or an attempt by the officers to check out a pedestrian.

"It happened extremely quickly, very quickly," she said. "From the information that was put out that a stop was being made to that the officers called for emergency cover to when the other officers arrived on scene, we're talking very, very quickly, Seconds to a minute or so. Very quickly."

The male suspect was captured in a nearby ravine and was being treated Friday at a hospital. Police did not identify him but Zimmerman said he was in critical condition with a gunshot wound.

Residents were ordered to stay in their homes throughout the night as San Diego police and officers from other law enforcement agencies scoured ravines, yards, streets and alleys for other possible suspects. A helicopter hovered over the neighborhood.

About nine hours after the shootout, heavily armed police officers surrounded a house about a half-mile away, one of them using a bullhorn to urge a man to surrender. Authorities also detonated several devices at the scene that made deafening booms.

Zimmerman said a potential second suspect was holed up in the house and that information she did not describe led officers to the home.

She told reporters she had worked with Zimmerman before she was promoted to the police chief post in 2014.

"I can tell you he is a loving, caring husband, father. Talked about his family all the time," Zimmerman said. "I know him, and this is gut-wrenching. He cared. He came to work every day wanting to just make a positive difference in the lives of our community."

After visiting Irwin later at UC San Diego Medical Center, Zimmerman told reporters that the officer's prospects for recovery were good.

"It's a little bit of a long haul until he makes a full recovery, but the good news is that he is going to survive and he is going to recover," she said outside the hospital.

The shooting came as law officers around the country are on high alert following the killing of officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, this month.

"Violence against the men and women who wear the badge is violence against us all," San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said after the shootings in his city. "I ask all San Diegans and all people across our nation to join together in support of our officers who courageously protect our communities. We need them and they need us."

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch mentioned the San Diego shooting during a meeting Friday with police officers and other first responders in Baton Rouge, where a gunman killed three on-duty law enforcement officers earlier this month.

"I know this community, more than most knows exactly what these families are feeling at this moment," she said.

#Not1More Campaign Marches In Philly For Immigration Reform

 (credit: Molly Daly)

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Volunteers from a number of immigrant rights groups marched in Center City today to push for the creation of just immigration policies, and an end to deportations.

Chanting “Not one more,” the marchers carried signs calling for a moratorium on deportations and the dismantling of detention centers. Adelina Nicholls, who lives in Georgia, says the increased expulsion of migrants under the Obama administration is breaking up families.

“The separation of families is huge, and have affected deeply our community. There are many parents — just in Georgia, we have more than 48,000 US citizen children without a parent, or both, because of the amount of deportations.”

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Cigarette taxes are on the way up in
Pennsylvania.

Starting Aug. 1, Pennsylvania’s newly enacted budget package means that the per-pack tax on cigarettes will rise by $1 to $2.60. Counting a $2 per-pack tax added in Philadelphia in 2014 to help fund the city’s schools, and the per-pack cigarette tax in Philadelphia will be $4.60.

That means Pennsylvania’s cigarette tax will go from tied for the nation’s 23rd highest with Ohio and Delaware to the nation’s 10th highest cigarette tax. Philadelphia’s tax will be the seventh-highest tax when combining local and state taxes. Chicago is No. 1 at $6.16 per pack.

That’s according to the Washington, D.C.-based Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

Documents: Paterno ignored boy's Sandusky complaint in 1976

Documents: Paterno ignored boy's Sandusky complaint in 1976

AP Photo
FILE - In this Aug. 6, 1999, file photo, Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, right, poses with his defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, during the college football team's media day in State College, Pa. Newly released court documents provided new details Tuesday, July 12, 2016, on allegations that Paterno was told in 1976 about a sex abuse accusation against Sandusky, and that some of Paterno’s assistants witnessed improper contact between Sandusky and children in the 1980s. Sandusky, who was arrested in 2011, is serving 30 to 60 years in prison on a 45-count child molestation conviction.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) -- Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, told by a teenage boy in 1976 that assistant coach Jerry Sandusky molested him in a shower, responded that he didn't want to hear about it and had "a football season to worry about," according to court documents unsealed Tuesday.

The boy, now a man identified as John Doe 150, said in 2014 that other boys in a shower heard him yell that Sandusky had just touched him sexually. He said he told several adults about it before seeking out Paterno.

"Is it accurate that Coach Paterno quickly said to you, 'I don't want to hear about any of that kind of stuff, I have a football season to worry about'?" a lawyer for Penn State's insurance carrier asked the man.
"Specifically, yes," the man replied.

"I was shocked, disappointed, offended. I was insulted," John Doe 150 testified. "I said, 'Is that all you're going to do?'"

He said Paterno "just walked away."

Excerpts of the man's testimony were among dozens of documents made public Tuesday in Penn State's fight with Pennsylvania Manufacturers' Association Insurance Co. over payments to Sandusky's accusers.

Sandusky was convicted in 2012 of dozens of child sexual abuse counts and is serving decades in prison while he appeals.

A judge disclosed the existence of the 1976 allegation two months ago, along with claims Penn State coaches witnessed inappropriate contact between Sandusky and children in the 1980s, but the newly unsealed documents provided greater detail.

Paterno told a grand jury in 2011 he first learned of Sandusky's inappropriate sexual contact in 2001, though records show high-ranking Penn State officials dealt with a complaint in 1998 from a woman whose son had showered with Sandusky.

Paterno died in January 2012, two months after Sandusky's arrest. A lawyer for his family said elements of John Doe 150's story "defy all logic" and there's evidence that "stands in stark contrast" to his claims.

A lawyer for Sandusky, who retired in 1999, also denied the allegation.

Testimony made public Tuesday suggested some Penn State coaches were aware of Sandusky's abuse decades ago.

Mike McQueary, a former assistant coach who told Paterno he saw Sandusky abusing a boy in a team shower in 2001, said in a 2015 deposition former defensive coordinator Tom Bradley was "not shocked" when told of it.

Bradley, who briefly took over as head coach after Paterno's firing, "said he knew of some things" about Sandusky dating to the 1980s, McQueary testified.

McQueary said Bradley told him he'd been approached by someone in the '80s who saw Sandusky "doing something to a boy" and in the '90s former assistant coach Greg Schiano saw Sandusky in the shower with a boy.

Bradley, now the defensive coordinator at UCLA, and Schiano, who holds the same position at Ohio State, denied witnessing any inappropriate behavior at Penn State.

The newly unsealed documents also provide additional information about 1987 and 1988 encounters accusers say were witnessed by coaching staff.

A man called John Doe 75 said in a 2014 deposition assistant football coach Joe Sarra walked into a coaches' meeting room in 1987 and saw Sandusky with his hands down the then-13-year-old boy's shorts.

John Doe 75 said Sarra may have said something like, "Oh, sorry," and immediately walked out. Sarra died four years ago.

A 2014 deposition by a man called John Doe 101 said Sandusky fondled him when he was a boy inside a crowded Penn State pool and coaches often saw him showering with Sandusky. But the one coach the man named said he wasn't working there at the time.

The records also include an insurance company lawyer's analysis that Penn State overpaid to settle with Sandusky's accusers, possibly as a result of the university's concern about publicity and a desire to resolve the matter quickly.

Lawyer Eric Anderson said Penn State "made little effort, if any, to verify the credibility of the claims." The university has paid $92 million to settle claims from 32 Sandusky accusers.

Lawyer Ken Feinberg, who helped mediate claims against the university, said the process was "very
objective" and none of the cases was easy to resolve. He said Penn State was diligent in making sure the claims were supported by sufficient proof.

Ikea Recall Comes Amid Growing Concerns Over Furniture Tip-Overs

Ikea Recall Comes Amid Growing Concerns Over Furniture Tip-Overs

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The simulation, a dresser toppling on to a dummy, is disturbing. The reality, even more so for at least three families who say their children were killed when an Ikea dresser fell and trapped the toddlers underneath.

Alan Feldman represents the family of a local victim, Curren Collas.

“They decided that they would not meet standards. They had a profitable item in the Malm dresser. They were selling millions of them and this is one of those instances where they appear to have prioritized profit over safety,” Feldman said.

The recall impacts Malm and other Ikea brand chests and drawers, some 29 million units.

The most recent death happened in February when a 22-month-old Minneapolis boy died when a drawer fell on him. Two years before that death is when Curren, from West Chester, died of a similar incident.

Experts say furniture tip-over, and not just Ikea brand, is a major problem and parents may not realize it.

“Furniture tip-over kills about one child every two weeks. Many more are injured and I have to believe there are many more near misses that don’t get reported to anybody,” Nancy Cowles, of Kids In Danger, said.

MD Anderson Applauds State of the Union Call to Cure Cancer

MD Anderson Applauds State of the Union Call to Cure Cancer

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is grateful Vice President Joe Biden has inspired the creation of a national cancer moonshot, and we applaud President Barack Obama’s commitment to support this collective fight to end cancer.

“This is the golden era of cancer research. Our team of world-leading cancer experts, along with many others in the field, continue to confer with Vice President Biden about the scope and potential of a national cancer moon shot,” said MD Anderson President Ronald DePinho, M.D. “We are encouraged by his leadership and look forward to working together on this global humanitarian endeavor. Patients and families around the world are counting on us to end cancer.”

In the fall of 2012, MD Anderson created the Cancer Moon Shots Program to accelerate declines in cancer mortality across several major cancer types. By building a new organizational paradigm of multidisciplinary teams and platforms focused on execution, these pioneering efforts have taught us that knowledge available today can be converted into new preventive measures and life-saving therapeutic advances for cancer patients here and around the world.

“Knowledge and technology have converged, enabling researchers to make a decisive assault on these deadly diseases. We also can bend the arc of cancer through concerted efforts in prevention and early detection, as up to half of all cancers can be prevented and catching cancer at its earliest stages offers markedly improved survival,” says DePinho. “The efforts of Congress to provide the strongest funding for the National Institutes of Health in more than a decade will make a significant impact on the future of the fight to end cancer.”

Rapid progress in curing advanced cancers is being made by harnessing the formidable capability of MD Anderson’s world-leading and largest clinical trials engine in cancer to test many targeted therapies, including those that reawaken the immune system. Of its 1,200 active clinical trials involving more than 11,000 patients per year, MD Anderson’s Cancer Moon Shots Program has launched 125 immuno-oncology trials across all major cancer types involving nearly 6,000 patients.

These trials have yielded practice-changing advances with improved long-term survival for a number of deadly cancers. Leveraging the world’s largest clinical trials program for cancer and strategic alliances with major pharmaceutical and biotech companies, MD Anderson is rapidly expanding several hundred additional immune-therapy trials, which will include deep analysis of genomic, immunological and clinical data to inform the use of these drugs in the right patient populations.

These big data analyses are led by computational biologist Andrew Futreal, Ph.D., and the father of modern immunotherapy, Jim Allison, Ph.D., who invented immune checkpoint blockade to treat cancer and leads the immunotherapy platform. Based on our early findings, we anticipate these concerted efforts will impact significantly on cancer deaths for several major cancer types in the next five to 10 years.

“Unleashing the immune system on many types of cancer will be a key development in this transformational moment in cancer research and care. MD Anderson’s moon shots, supported by 10 platforms with leading expertise and technology under the direction of Dr. Giulio Draetta, as well as significant support from philanthropy, NIH grants and other sources, are helping us in Making Cancer History®,” DePinho said.

Argentina's 'stolen babies' seek truth, face ghosts

Argentina's 'stolen babies' seek truth, face ghosts

In this May 11, 2016 photo, Pedro Sandoval, who was stolen as a baby, poses holding a framed image of the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo group, that include both of his biological grandmothers, who helped him recover his true identity, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Sandoval stopped celebrating Mother's Day, Father's Day and even his own birthday after he found out the truth: The mom and dad he knew growing up had stolen him from his biological parents, who were kidnapped, tortured and never heard from again during Argentina's 1976-1983 military dictatorship.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- Pedro Sandoval stopped celebrating Mother's Day, Father's Day and even his own birthday after he found out the truth: The mom and dad he knew growing up had stolen him from his biological parents, who were kidnapped, tortured and never heard from again during Argentina's 1976-1983 military dictatorship.

"I'm still jealous of friends who can hug or get into arguments with their parents," said Sandoval, 38, alluding to the biological parents he never met. "But I'm also thankful that I could at least hug my grandfather and grandmother."

Four decades after the ruling military junta launched a systematic plan to steal babies born to political prisoners, Argentina's search for truth is increasingly focused on the 500 or so newborns whisked away and raised by surrogate families. Several hundred have yet to be accounted for.

This spring a visiting U.S. President Barack Obama and Argentine President Mauricio Macri announced, on the 40th anniversary of the coup that brought the junta to power, that Washington would open up a trove of U.S. intelligence files from Argentina's Dirty War era, when an estimated 30,000 people were killed or forcibly "disappeared" by the regime. It may take a few years for the documents to be released, but the news gave families hope for word on the fate of other stolen babies.

For the children who have already been found, coming to grips with the past is a painful process.

Sandoval, known then as Alejandro Rei, never suspected anything was amiss growing up in a middle-class household on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. But in 2004, Victor Rei, a former border patrol officer and the man that Sandoval called his father, became the target of an investigation and his life turned upside down.

Sandoval said he felt both fury and crushing guilt after a childhood he describes as full of wonderful memories. And yet like others, he was torn over where his loyalties lay: At one point during the investigation Sandoval tried unsuccessfully to protect Rei by tainting DNA samples used to identify the older man.

"I made some mistakes," he said. "It was part of a defense mechanism."

Ultimately DNA matched Sandoval to Pedro Sandoval and Liliana Fontana, who were kidnapped by security forces in July 1977 when Liliana was two months pregnant. She gave birth to Pedro in captivity, and four months later he was taken away. His birth parents were never seen again.

"It's still tough and bizarre," Sandoval said. "But I found it beautiful that at least for four months I was in her arms."

He has since severed ties with the people who raised him and has become close to relatives of his biological parents. His wife is expecting their first baby.

To date, 119 cases of stolen children have been resolved. Each discovery makes for banner headlines and prompts both personal and national soul-searching.

"These cases are moving because they are unique, painful and about suffering and trauma that doesn't stop," said Claudia Salatino, a psychologist who has treated some of the victims.

Guillermo Perez Roisinblit, 38, was Guillermo Gomez for decades before he was contacted by his biological sister and the Grandmothers of the Playa de Mayo, a human rights group that formed in 1977 to search for the disappeared. They showed him a family picture; Perez was shocked by his resemblance to the man who would later be confirmed as his real father.

"It took me 21 years to find my grandson and 15 years to win his love," said Rosa de Roisinblit, 96, who is vice president of the Grandmothers.

"It was such a difficult process," Perez said, sitting next to her.

Today both are plaintiffs in a trial that began last month against the former head of Argentina's air force for the 1978 abduction and disappearance of activists Patricia Roisinblit and Jose Manuel Perez Rojo. Patricia gave birth to Perez at the Naval Mechanics School, where thousands of leftist dissidents were jailed and tortured during the Dirty War.

Francisco Gomez, the man who raised Perez, served time for stealing Perez when he was an infant and is now accused in the same trial involving the ex-air force chief, who is charged in the kidnapping of Perez's parents.

Perez said he visited Gomez in prison in 2003, and Gomez angrily blamed him for his confinement.

"When I get out," Perez recalled Gomez saying, "I'm going to put a bullet in your forehead, in your two grandmothers and in your sister."

During the dictatorship, the Grandmothers marched weekly at Buenos Aires' main square to demand the return of their loved ones. Since Argentina's return to democracy, they have lobbied the government to create a DNA database and dedicate judicial resources to the search.

"They're the closest to real heroes," Perez said. "They fought against a dictatorship risking their own lives. ... And that's how I see my grandmother, as a hero."

The memorial would be built on the Philadelphia side of the Ben Franklin Bridge, on a triangular DRPA-owned parcel at Sixth and Race, just north of the Constitution Center.

Proposed renderings show two symbolic towers – each 9 feet eleven inches tall – with a replica of the Liberty Bell hanging between them. DRPA CEO John Hanson says the memorial will contain authentic artifacts.

“There will be a piece of steel from the World Trade Center, a limestone granite block from the Pentagon, and loose soil and a rock from Shanksville, Pennsylvania,” Hanson said.

Ex-Florida cop charged in shooting of armed black musician

Ex-Florida cop charged in shooting of armed black musician

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- A fired Florida police officer was arrested and charged Wednesday with manslaughter and attempted murder in the fatal shooting of a legally armed black musician after prosecutors say an audio recording and physical evidence show the musician had thrown his weapon to the ground and was running away when the lethal round was fired.

Prosecutors also allege that the recording shows Palm Beach Gardens Officer Nouman Raja misled investigators and lied to a 911 operator to make it appear that Corey Jones, 31, was still armed and a threat more than 30 seconds after he had been felled by the officer's bullets last Oct. 18.

Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg announced the charges at a news conference after a grand jury found the shooting unjustified. If convicted, Raja could face life in prison. Aronberg declined to answer questions about the case.

Jones family issued a statement saying they are relieved by the arrest.

"While we understand that nothing can bring back our son, brother and friend, this arrest sends a message that this conduct will not be tolerated from members of law enforcement," the statement said.

Raja's attorney, Richard Lubin, did not immediately respond to phone calls or email.

The charges, according to court documents, center on a recording of Jones talking to a tow truck operator after his SUV had broken down on an Interstate 95 off ramp before dawn as he returned home from a performance. Jones, a drummer who also worked as a housing inspector, had purchased his gun only days earlier because he was worried about being robbed of his music equipment, his family has said. He had a concealed weapons permit.

Jones and the operator had talked uneventfully for about two minutes when Raja, who is of South Asian descent, pulled up the ramp from the wrong direction and parked in front of Jones' SUV, according to charging documents. Raja, who was investigating a string of auto burglaries, was driving an unmarked cargo van with no police lights and was in civilian clothes: a tan T-shirt, jeans, sneakers and a baseball cap.

Raja's sergeant told investigators that he had instructed Raja to wear his tactical vest that has police markings while on this assignment for his own safety and to identify himself, but it was found in Raja's van along with his police radio, the documents say. Raja, 38, had been a police officer for seven years, but only about six months with Palm Beach Gardens, a well-to-do suburb. He also taught police classes at a local community college.

Charging documents say that, on the recording, as Jones and the operator talked, the door chimes from Jones' SUV sounded, indicating he stepped out as Raja approached. It recorded an exchange where Raja repeatedly asks variations of "You good?" to which Jones repeatedly replies he is. Raja never says he is a police officer.

Suddenly, the officer shouts, using an expletive, for Jones to put his hands up.

Jones replies: "Hold on!" And Raja repeats his demand.

Raja then fired three shots in less than two seconds, according to the charging documents. Ten seconds of silence then pass before three more shots, each fired about one second apart, are heard.

"A reasonable person can only assume the thoughts and concerns Corey Jones was experiencing as he saw the van approaching him at that hour of the morning," prosecutors wrote in the charging documents. "At no time during the recording did Raja say he was a police officer" and acted confrontationally, prosecutors wrote.

Immediately after the shooting, Raja used his personal cellphone to call 911. As the operator answered 33 seconds after the last shot was fired, according to charging documents, Raja yelled at someone to drop the gun even though Jones' autopsy showed a bullet had pierced his heart and lungs and would have felled him almost immediately.

Raja told the 911 dispatcher that he had identified himself as a police officer and that he began firing as Jones came at him with a gun, prosecutors say. He said he continued firing because Jones was pointing his gun at him as he ran away.

When Raja's sergeant and other officers arrived, they found Jones' body between some trees almost 200 feet from the back of his SUV. A police dog found Jones' gun about 75 feet from his SUV, near where Raja told his sergeant he had seen Jones throw it. The safety was on and it had fired no shots.

Prosecutors say in their charging document that given the distance between the gun and Jones' body - and the heart wound that would have incapacitated him - they believe Raja fired the last three shots after he knew Jones had thrown down his gun and was running away.

David S. Weinstein, a former state and federal prosecutor, said Aronberg probably charged Raja with manslaughter and attempted murder instead of murder to make it more likely to get a conviction. If Aronson went for first-degree murder and there were no provisions allowing for the jury to convict Raja of a lesser charge such as manslaughter, Weinstein said, he risked an acquittal or a hung jury if jurors believed Raja feared for his life when he fired the first shot.
