Jerome Whyatt “Jerry” Mondesire October 10, 1949 – October 4, 2015 by B. Akiba Collin Staff Reporter brendaakivacollins@netzero.net

Jerome Whyatt “Jerry” Mondesire October 10, 1949 - October 4, 2015

Jerome Whyatt Mondesire, “the champion for the underdog”, died on October 4, 2015. When he died, a powerful voice for social, economic and racial justice fell silent.  He was undergoing dialysis treatment at Chestnut Hill Hospital Friday, October 2, when he suffered a brain aneurysm. He was transferred to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, placed on a ventilator, but died later that following Sunday.

Jerome Whyatt “Jerry” Mondesire was born in 1949 in Harlem, New York.  His Dominican father, Jerome Alexis Mondesire, was a follower of the political philosophy of Marcus Garvey.  His mother, Winnifred Taylor Mondesire, was from South Carolina and strongly stressed the importance of education to her family. It is possible that these two strong influences of his earlier life is helped to mold his political views in his later years.

A hint of his impatience and underlying anger in the way civil-rights activism was being carried out could be seen in Mondesire’s thoughts as a teenager in high school.  A member of the high school’s NAACP High School Youth Council, he said that “the national NAACP board was made up of a bunch of folks who just weren't angry enough”.

Mondesire’s father wanted him to study law, but instead he enrolled in the City College of New York as journalism major. After college he was employed as a reporter for the Baltimore Sun, and later in 1974 he came to The Philadelphia Inquirer as a reporter.  During his 6 year tenure at the  Inquirer he was appointed City Desk Editor and later was the Inquirer’s New Jersey Editor, until he resigned to become Chief of Staff for State Representative William Gray in 1980.

Mondesire worked for the Representative until Gray unexpectedly resigned in 1991. Following this, he founded the Philadelphia Sunday Sun newspaper, and became heavily involved with various political issues and organizations affecting African Americans, in particular, and the city’s larger community, in general.  It is during this time that the moniker, “the champion for the underdog” took hold.  State Representative Robert Brady spoke of his friend for over 30 years, as “a fighter for people who couldn’t fight for themselves.”

In 1996 Mondesire was elected head of the NAACP's Philadelphia branch, the nation's oldest civil rights organization. He won by a ratio of nearly 2-1 in a three-way race.  Under his charismatic and innovative leadership he helped to end the organization’s dwindling following and to increase its membership substantially during his leadership.

But after leading the organization for 17 years of phenomenal growth and accomplishments in April 2014, Mondesire and 3 board members were suspended by the national NAACP over questions about the use of chapter funds. It was alleged that he misdirected about ten thousand dollars to his nonprofit organization, Next Generation CDC; and later in December an election for new officers was held.  Rodney Muhammad, a minister of the Nation of Islam, was elected as the new president of the Philadelphia NAACP.

After learning of Mondesire’s death, Minister Muhammad said, “We will always remember the sterling leadership of J. Whyatt Mondesire.  He led us in the city, the state and as a member of the NAACP national board, and we want to do everything we can to build on the good that Jerry Mondesire has done."

Mondesire had become engaged to Catherine Hicks, the public relations and event coordinator for his Philadelphia Sun newspaper in July of this year when she threw a surprise party for him when the NAACP annual conference was held here. It is said that sometime during the festivities that Mondesire dropped to one knee and asked her to marry him.

Her email invitation included the statement that “…his commitment to justice and equality for all people, not just people of color, was unmatched.  Although he is no longer serving as president of the PA State Conference and the Philadelphia chapter, we are celebrating him and all that he has done over the last 17 years."

In addition to his recent engagement to Catherine Hicks, Mondesire had two previous marriages and three children from those unions.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A Philadelphia public school had a very special visitor on Wednesday, who brought an unusual message to motivate students. The Kearney School, in Northern Liberties, hosted the first African-American woman in space.

Dr. Mae Jemison is the prize in a contest called “Win a Day with Mae,” sponsored by Bayer, to encourage science in schools. Kearney, with its arts-infused curriculum, might seem an unlikely winner but the astronaut’s message made clear why it was the perfect choice.

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) — The Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s released a statement saying its members are “disturbed” by reports a Supreme Court justice sent or received explicit emails from a personal account. And in a statement released Monday, the state Supreme Court says it’s looking into the matter.

The statement comes in response to published reports linking state Supreme Court justice Michael Eakin to explicit emails. But it seems to call into question whether special counsel retained by the court was given full access during its investigation last year.

FALSINGTON, Pa. (AP) — Catholic officials say a suburban Philadelphia church that needs more than $1 million in repairs will be closed in November.

The archdiocese of Philadelphia announced Sunday that Saint Joseph the Worker Church in Fallsington will no longer serve as a worship site of Saint Francis Cabrini Parish “and will close as a Roman Catholic Church.”

Officials said Saint Joseph the Worker Church needs repairs to the roof and heating system, which it share with an attached school that is not in use. They also said the annual cost of maintaining the combined buildings is about $121,000, and the parish had a deficit of about $240,000 last year.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia City Council has passed a bill that would require public places with single occupancy rest rooms to make them gender neutral.

The bill is intended to ease the discomfort of transgendered people, but sponsors say it will also eliminate needless lines at restrooms designated for a specific gender.

Council will also consider taking up the cause of workers who are cheated out of wages. A bill introduced today would create a “wage theft coordinator” in city government.

Mayor of the Borough of Yeadon, Pennsylvania, Rohan Hepkins, A Protector of the Community in Which He Serves: by Mary A. Jones majoneskyw@gmail.com (215) 800-3444

Mayor of the Borough of Yeadon, Pennsylvania, Rohan Hepkins, A Protector of the Community in Which He Serves: by Mary A. Jones majoneskyw@gmail.com (215) 800-3444

Above L to R:  Mayor Rohan K. Hepkins, Yeadon, Borough
2015 Philadelphia Mayoral Candidate, Jim Kenny.

Rohan Hepkins is a man to be respected in the community in which he serves and a name to listen for in the Tri-State area. During a recent interview with Mayor Hepkins, I discovered great things about the character of his work that the Borough of Yeadon should be aware of, and that the neighboring communities should take note and support.

Mayor Hepkins is currently the pastor of the Chapel of the Good Shepheard Church in Yeadon, Pennsylvania, and is the chairman of Building One Pennsylvania. Building One Pennsylvania is a nonprofit organization that lobbies the state and federal government on housing, education, funding, and the like.

The mayor states that his number one goal is to keep the residents of Yeadon safe and decrease the crime rate in the burrow. Mayor Hepkins feels that this assignment is surmountable as he says: “I will be the voice and ears of the residents. I am a protector of the people and I want to know what they want from me.” How great these words are, especially when they are backed up by action. You can hear the passion of the major and his genuine concern for the people with the voice of these words. As a pastor, a shepherd of the flock, and not a hireling, this becomes second nature in his character.

Mayor Hepkins continues by saying that he has an open heart and ear to what the people want from him because he listens. It is apparent to the Borough of Yeadon that the property taxes are high and school funding is low. His aim is to lower property taxes, while increasing school funding. This task would include reaching out to obtain the supporters that are needed, as in the other boroughs, such as Radnor. And Hepkins wants supporters of all boroughs that have students in the William Penn School District. Mayor Hepkins says that if property taxes are lowered, Yeadon, again, would become attractive for people to come back; bringing wealth into the community. To sum it up, the mayor says that “there needs to be a tax relief and new funding formulas.” Mayor Hepkins is currently working with Governor Tom Wolf on getting a budget passed that will have a direct impact on this goal being accomplished; helping the residents of this community survive high property tax.

In order for one to be a “Protector of the People”, there has to be a beginning point. As pastor of the Chapel of the Good Shepherd Church, he is leading his people, along with Emmanuel Lutheran Church, with Pastor Denis Moses, to start a pilot program in the community that will provided goods and services for the parents and students in the neighboring boroughs. Starting with the elementary and middle school age children, they will provide a means for them to have their homework assignments completed and fed by the time their parents pick them up.  The program seeks to be more than an afterschool program, but supports the parents and grandparents who worry and struggle during this latch-key time of the day. The program is in the embryo stage, but is progressing to the vision being realized.

Keep your eyes to this thread and read more about the pilot program and the work that Mayor Rohan Hepkins is shaping to form in the Borough of Yeadon.
