Black History 2015: Religions And Slave Trade Killings In The 1800’s - Part 4a of 9

Black History 2015: Religions And Slave Trade Killings In The 1800’s - Part 4a of 9

Many students and parents are wondering if true American History correctly portrays Black History. If so, they will discover that an earlier generation of evangelical priests, elders, reverends, and yes, preachers, actually had supported slavery in both the North and South during the early eighteenth century.  And this fact has had a strongly effected all discussions about religion and slave trade killings in the 1800’s.

Was there racism, cultism, or over-righteousness involving any religious community before, during, or after the civil war?  If so, how does this compare with religious tolerance today such as child sex abuse and the prohibiting of free exercise of religion?

Research reveals that many faith-based groups and faith-based attitudes affected the state government laws that were used to keep blacks as slaves in the 1800’s.  And there were many popular religions which led a church governmental authority where members followed their own laws.

Using the scriptures, many national and international clergymen began to defend the institution of slavery, invoking a Christian hierarchy in which slaves were bound to obey their masters.
What were some of the more prominent national and international religious groups existing and holding its own form of scripture as well as governmental authority during the slave trade?

Catholicism's supreme leader directed members to use scripture other than the King James Version.   The Baptist spiritual leaders used scripture to baptize believers as a public symbol of a new start by immersing them in water.   The Methodists used scripture as a denomination that grew out of the teachings of John Wesley.

And the Presbyterians used scripture to form a group that was born out of the Welsh Methodist revival and the preaching of Howell Harris Howell and Daniel Rowland Daniel promoting the early Christian church.   In addition, even the Jewish leadership as well as the Moslems - all of these groups had officers who were appointed by a religious governing body- used scripture and attitude to reflect their own leadership during the 1800’s.

Black History facts show that as late as 1800 most slaves brought into the U.S. from all over had not been converted from popular Muslim beliefs to Judaism or Christian beliefs.

Therefore, for many slaveholders, keeping religion involved in the dominance, helped to promote Judaism, Christianity, and Islam more in conflict with each other during slavery. This religious conflict was becoming a force to be reckoned with if anyone wanted to stop slavery.

At times black Christianity was used as a way to validate slave revolts against white Christianity. Because of constant slave revolts independent Black churches arose.

And the in-fighting of each governing group, black or white, made it easier to ignore the wrong of slavery altogether.

The leaders of many mainstream churches had their own interest in mind when trying to influence governments. Meanwhile, some who believed in the Torah, Koran, Old and New Testaments did use faith as a means to avoid participation in slavery.

There were many Jewish, Muslim, and Christian believers in the 1800’s who stood against slavery. It’s curious how many religious organizations were in existence during the slave trade killings of Blacks and extremely poor Whites during the American civil war who believed and practiced religious pluralism as a means to end slavery.

There was also the option to come all together in peace and friendship. And it seems that many individuals chose that option.  More Black History lessons should be about them.  To be continued…
