Carved Pumpkins at Night

CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) – Officials in Camden County are encouraging kids and teens to forgo the traditional “Mischief Night” festivities in favor of other activities.

Camden is hosting several events in area parks that are meant to act as safe alternatives to the once typical acts of vandalism such a toilet-papering trees and egging homes.

The events are being held from 5 – 7 p.m. and include refreshments and giveaways as well as activities.

Lamont A. Nelson Helping To Improve Neighborhoods Creating His Halloween Graffiti by Van Stone frontpagenews1@yahoo.com (267) 293-9201

Lamont A. Nelson Helping To Improve Neighborhoods Creating His Halloween Graffiti by Van Stone frontpagenews1@yahoo.com (267) 293-9201

His graffiti is much like trying to make sure that no one is erasing a part of themselves during Halloween.  Lamont A. Nelson, a local graffiti artist, is doing some nice work in Philly’s iconic 60th and Washington Avenue street area in support of any Halloween that will promote improving neighborhoods.

Nelson wants to use graffiti art on white paper as backdrop for much of anyone’s safe Halloween party. He wants the fun party to also be some sort of reminder and explanation about the importance of knowing a little something about culture and graffiti artist. And, Nelson wants kids as well as adults to know much more about what hand writers do as artists.

So, by Saturday morning, on October 31, 2014, this Halloween, the white sheets of paper that were once used to just fill up printers and copy machines will be adorned with colorful graffiti handwritings that are black, gray and blue.

In graffiti work to create something special for the festive seasons is the ultimate form of respect. So for Nelson to design, pen and ink in his graffiti work solely to support this Halloween that is work which stands out.

Nelson wants to work along with other artists he has in mind who are at the ready to write up the papers and by Saturday morning help kids and parents happy to get some graffiti treats.

Lamont, a teacher by trade, want kids to be safe during Halloween and ask their friends to consider try some handy handwriting on blank sheets of paper.

Many in the neighborhood and graffiti artists are upset about how Halloween most always gets a bad rap.
Only those who really don’t understand what the fun of a safe Halloween is about make a fuss about Halloween being evil amongst other things.  But the truth about Halloween is that the celebration gives kids, and those who are kids at heart, a chance to be allowed to party.

They’re good kids and parents who just like to have safe fun. They’re not evil. They’re not promoting the destruction of a good community after participating in Halloween. And Nelson, using his graffiti hand skills, is checking to see that his artwork will be used for the safe family fun.

SEPTA Union Leaders Speak Out About Possible Strike

SEPTA Union Leaders Speak Out About Possible Strike

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The Transit Workers’ Local 234 voted unanimously on Sunday to authorize a SEPTA strike, which would impact the buses, trains and trollies. Union leaders spoke out Monday afternoon.

A decision on whether to strike could come as soon as Friday.

“It’s not something we take lightly.”

Local 234 President Willie Brown briefed reporters saying the union and SEPTA are as far apart as Pennsylvania is to California and SEPTA must use the next four days to close the gap on key issues like pension reform, and arbitration to avoid a strike.

“To me this is not about economics as past contracts have been — to me it’s about egos.”

EDISON, N.J. (AP) — Four Edison police officers have been indicted on charges that they conspired to retaliate against an officer from another department because he arrested one of the Edison officer’s relatives for drunken driving.

The indictment recently handed up by a Middlesex County grand jury alleges that in early 2012, the four Edison officers improperly accessed information about a North Brunswick officer and performed surveillance on him and his travel habits. But prosecutors say no actual retaliation occurred.

SEPTA Trolley, Bus, Subway Operators Give Union Leadership Authorization To Strike

File Photo (credit: Matt Rivers)

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) –   Members of SEPTA’s largest labor union – which represents subway, bus, and trolley operators – voted to give its leadership the authorization to call a strike, but they say the buses and train trolleys will keep rolling, at least for now.

Members filing out of Sunday’s meeting say they’ve been told they will be on the job this week, but they say the vote was unanimous:

“I didn’t hear anyone say nay,” says Transport Workers Union Local 234 member Mark Hilton.
Hilton says no one wants to strike, but he says the strike authorization is their only leverage against SEPTA negotiators:

The National Exhoodus Retreat for Children and Young Adults of Incarcerated Parents, directed by Malik Aziz, builds a new website as a new Model for Youth Development in Southeastern Pennsylvania areas

The National Exhoodus Retreat for Children and Young Adults of Incarcerated Parents, directed by Malik Aziz, builds a new website as a new Model for Youth Development in Southeastern Pennsylvania areas

Malik Aziz, the local and often time’s national leader in the fight for more awareness about troubled children and young adults coping with today’s urban crisis, has a website at http://malikaziz.blogspot.com/ called United Windows with Malik Aziz and Antoinette Jackson-Aziz. The site was created for Malik and his wife Antoinette in 2010.  Today, in 2014, Aziz is involved with re-launching the United Windows website to share the site with a program for children and young adults of incarcerated parents.

Launched in June 2000, National Exhoodus Networks, LLC Summer Youth and Young Adult Exhoodus Retreat for Children and Young Adults of Incarcerated Parents is a long-term student management intervention model for disconnected youth whose obstacles such as lack of parental leadership, education, homelessness, trauma, substance abuse, and court involvement prevent them from accessing resources and achieving educational, employment, and healthy living goals.

Exhoodus Retreat for Children and Young Adults of Incarcerated Parents work on a one-on-one basis with each youth to remove barriers, proactively encourage participation in a broad set of Exhoodus Networks, LLC services, and connect them to other needed resources through participation in a broad set of Exhoodus Networks, LLC  services, and connect them to other needed resources within the community so they may make a successful transition to adulthood and reconnect to their family support and communities.
A New Model for Youth Development in Southeastern Pennsylvania areas such as Philadelphia County and Delaware County.
The National Exhoodus Council from 2000 to 2010 successfully operated Exhoodus Networks, LLC summer youth and young adult Exhoodus Retreat for Children and Young Adults of Incarcerated Parents.   This retreat was held every summer, during the years of operation, at the end of August, at the Hillside Inn Resort, in Marshall Creek, Monroe County, East Stroudsburg, Pa Pocono Mts area.

Enrollment for the Retreat did not exceed 100 youth as these children and young adults were primarily from the inner city of Philadelphia, Pa.  The Exhoodus Council, picked up operation of the Retreat in 2007, prior to that it was a partnership with Men United for a Better Philadelphia, Mayor's Office of Community Services and The Philadelphia District Attorney' Office,  and the City Wide Youth Agency.

The Director of the Exhoodus Retreat for Children and Young Adults of Incarcerated Parents is Malik Aziz, founder and co-chair, MUBP.  The retreat ceased operations in 2010 due to the closure of the Hillside Inn Resort. However, in 2014 the retreat operations has been re-launched promoting getting youth off of the mean streets back into the homes using the best means of internet services a business has to offer to maintain safety and success involving the summer retreat.

EXHOODUS RETREAT Believes:
  • A strong relationship with caring adult support is critical to a youth's ability to achieve successful outcomes
  • Combining individualized student management with mentoring and high-quality services leads to transformational outcomes for children and young adults
  • Student management will give disconnected children and youth an opportunity to develop a relationship with an Exhoodus Retreat personal care person committed to the "relentless pursuit" of his/her success
The Exhoodus Retreat Goes Beyond Traditional Student Management Models
Personal Care Persons are Exhoodus Retreat support individuals that act as mentors, case managers, community health workers, and advocates for high risk youth and children and young adults whose parents face incarceration.  These highly trained and experienced support individuals work intentionally and deliberately to build relationships designed to transform a young person’s life.  Working across programs to address all the youth’s needs, Exhoodus Retreat leaders work with youth over an extended period of time.

They continue to work with youth even after they complete programs and services, ensuring a lasting impact by constantly moving towards academic success, long-term employment, and live healthy living skills.
Exhoodus Retreat Evaluation Design and Results.

As with all Exhoodus Retreat programs, the Exhoodus Retreat uses a web-based data management system that allows for sophisticated demographic output, and outcomes reporting.
